Our political world is reminding us of times throughout history that we don’t want to repeat, most notably the U.S. Civil War, the Great Depression, and World War II. And, indeed there is strikingly similar astrology from those periods to our current times. There’s also similar astrology to the mid-late 1960s, a significant time in U.S. history with the rise of civil rights, queer and feminist movements.
I want to share about these similarities in this post, but to be clear, I’m not doing it for the sake of adding more fear and anxiety. An astrologers’ job is to look at planetary patterns and cycles to help us understand where we’re at now and where we might be heading. Even when our reality looks bleak, I believe that we always have the power to change things for the better. I am *not* a doom and gloom astrologer or person. I have Jupiter next to my Sun, and Jupiter always holds optimism and dreams for a better world. I believe that we will beat the fascists, Nazis, and Confederates (even though they never really went away).
We have been here before, and, unfortunately, we are here again, but we will continue to fight the good fight, and, while some of the astrology indicates war and hardship, it also indicates progress towards social justice. Whenever we have tremendous progress, we have tremendous backlash, and whenever we have oppressive backlash, we have progress being implemented.
Uranus In Gemini and Neptune in Aries: 1860s During The U.S. Civil War
I want to start with the U.S. Civil War. Two key astrological transits happening in 2025 are Neptune moving into Aries and Uranus moving into Gemini. Neptune is in a sign for roughly 12 years, and Uranus is in a sign for roughly 7 years, so these two planets changing signs in the same year is a big deal. The last time Uranus was in Gemini was 1941 – 1948 during World War 2. Before that, it was during the Civil War 1858 – 1866. And, the last time Neptune was in Aries was 1861 to 1875. So, both Uranus and Neptune were in the signs they will enter this year when the United States had its Civil War.
Before the Civil War began, the elite enslavers took power in 1953, and wanted slavery to be the norm and expand throughout the entire United States. Uranus was in Taurus during this time. Uranus has been in Taurus for the last seven years, including during the most recent election in November 2024. And, while, we aren’t living in the exact times of slavery as people were in the 1800s, the orange menace's administration and agenda is deeply racist, misogynistic, and anti-trans, and his return to the presidency forces us to reckon with the muck of our history. Pluto dipped back into Capricorn for one final push in late 2024 before it fully submerged into Aquarius, and it was in Capricorn on the day of the recent U.S. election indicating a return to the past. Pluto digs deep and brings our attention to power - unequal, toxic, abusive power dynamics, and it gives us an opportunity to work through the systemic inequities and power imbalances of our world.
With Pluto now in Aquarius combined with Uranus moving into Gemini and Neptune moving into Aries, this highlights differences in beliefs and ideology most likely prompting a second civil war. Unfortunately, there’s always a war going on in the world, but in regards to another civil war in the United States, I believe this has been brewing for quite some time. It’s not going to look the exact same way as it did in the 1860s, but the crux of it is the same. History doesn’t repeat itself exactly, but it does raise similar themes of the planetary cycles that occurred prior.
We've been getting a preview of what Uranus in Gemini could bring with Jupiter in Gemini. Jupiter entered Gemini in June, 2024 and will be there until June 2025. Gemini is the sign of the twins, of multitudes that shows us multiple, different viewpoints and ideologies. It’s also a mutable sign, which is adaptable, changeable, variable. Uranus is erratic, destabilizing, unpredictable, and disrupts the usual way of doing things. Gemini and Uranus are also about breaking free. The challenge is that freedom means different things to different people, and, thus, we are facing the chaos of varying ideologies about what freedom means, and what kind of freedoms we need and want to have.

The United States has Uranus in Gemini in its natal birth chart, which means that this country will be going through its Uranus return for the next seven years. This means that a lot will be shaken up, and it’s not always going to be what we expect. In addition, Donny Trash is a Gemini Sun with Uranus in Gemini, so he will be going through his Uranus return as well. How fitting for a president to lead a country that’s going through its Uranus return while he’s going through his own 😂 It’s like the Wild Wild West or the most dramatic reality tv show you’ve ever seen, but that’s not to make light of the serious damage he and his leaders have already done and will continue to do.
Astrologer, Nick Dagan Best has pointed out that every time Uranus has been in Gemini, the U.S. has been involved in some kind of war. Uranus was also in Gemini during World War II (as well as the American Revolutionary War and the Cold War). But, while the Civil War began during the Uranus in Gemini and Neptune in Aries period, it also ended during that period. In 1865, the 13th Amendment passed to abolish slavery. Unfortunately, while slavery was technically abolished, white supremacy has continued to reign, which is why we’re coming back to the 1800s. Uranus in Gemini and Neptune in Aries is reminding us of the different ideologies that make up our world, and that we must face our racist, misogynistic, oppressive underbelly that has formed the United States. These planetary cycles repeating themselves is an opportunity to free ourselves and each other from systems of oppression.
We’re also having some strikingly similar astrology to 1929 right now. Hoover was the president in 1929 and he was the last president to introduce tariffs. He also “scapegoated Mexican Americans for the economic crisis. Approximately one million Mexican Americans were forcibly "repatriated" to Mexico in a forced migration campaign known as the Mexican Repatriation even though a majority of them were born in the United States” (Hoover, Wikipedia). Hmmm sound familiar?
In 1929, Jupiter was in Gemini as it is now. Saturn was moving from a Jupiter ruled mutable sign (Sagittarius) to a cardinal sign (Capricorn). Saturn is currently in Pisces, the other Jupiter ruled mutable sign, and will move into a cardinal sign (Aries) in May, 2025. In addition, there was a Venus retrograde in Aries, and we’re about to have a Venus retrograde in Aries. There was a Mars retrograde in Cancer in January, and we’re currently in a Mars retrograde in Cancer. Lastly, Neptune changed signs that year (and Neptune is in a sign for over a decade so that’s significant). Neptune will change signs this year in March, 2025.
1929 was when the sock market crashed sparking the start of the Great Depression. There was also an influenza outbreak that killed 200,000 of people. Martin Luther King Jr was born (January 15th, BIG Capricorn energy for him, am I right!?). The first Academy Awards were held in Los Angeles. Anne Frank was born. There was the first broadcast of the “demonstration of color TV.” There were many more events that year and in the 1930s that were integral to culture and geopolitics, and I think we are going to see a return to some of the issues and themes from that time.
2025 Mirrors 1968 Astrology Pointing To The Rise In Social Justice Movements
Interestingly, we’re having similar astrology to 1929 when Martin Luther King Jr was born, and we’re also having similar astrology to 1968 when he was tragically killed. He was killed during Aries season on April 4th when Saturn was also in Aries. 2025 has strong Aries energy as it’s not just Neptune moving there, but Saturn will move there as well in May. We’re also going to have a Venus retrograde in Aries in March and our last eclipse in the Aries/Libra cycle in Aries on March 29th. Aries is the sign of leaders and leadership, and Saturn there can symbolize the death of important leaders. In 1968, it indicated the devastating death of a civil rights leader, but this year, it could be the death of fascist leaders instead (Saturn was also in Aries during the start of World War 2).
With Saturn moving into Aries, this transit is perfect for resisting oppression. Aries, ruled by Mars, is fierce and passionate about what it’s fighting for. Saturn resists and says no. Neptune in Aries will fight for what it believes in, and Saturn will resist systems of oppression. There will be a lot more marches and protests over the years, just like there was in the 1960s. In addition, there was a Jupiter-Uranus conjunction in 1968-1969 as there was in April 2024. Astrologist, Richard Tarnas, in his book, Cosmos and Psyche, dives deep into what Jupiter-Uranus aspects have represented throughout history, and the results are some of “the most remarkable” major innovative scientific and creative breakthroughs, but they’re ALSO associated with social justice movements.
Saturn was in Pisces in the mid-late 1960s as it is now and has been since 2023. Astrologer, SJ Anderson, pointed out that the student anti-war movements in the 60s were kicked off when Saturn was in Pisces aspecting Jupiter in Taurus (Jupiter was in Taurus the first half of 2024). In 2024, we saw student anti-war/genocide protests increase globally mirroring the anti-war protests in the late 60s. Then, when Saturn moved into Aries in 1967, the U.S. was fully in a war in Vietnam. Also, the lunar nodes were in Aries and Libra in the late 1960s, where they were in 2023-2024. We are going to continue to see resonance of the very late 60s, which was a pivotal time for civil rights and feminist movements. We're going to continue to see the fight against wars, genocides, the fight against abortion bans, racism, transphobia, misogyny, and all intersecting systems of oppression.
We're dealing with challenges and setbacks. But, we’re dealing with setbacks because we’ve been making progress, and we will continue to make progress, as Uranus symbolizes. We must remember that we have the power to change things. Uranus in Gemini shows us that we can turn this country in the direction for the better, even when it seems like things keep getting worse. Social justice movements tend to rise when things aren't going well, so while fascists might gain more power, social justice movements will ALSO gain more power.
While Pluto was NOT in Aquarius during any of the historical periods I’ve mentioned in this post, it’s worth mentioning this important transit because the times in history that Pluto has been in Aquarius, we have seen the rise in social movements and revolutions. Pluto in Aquarius AND a Jupiter-Uranus conjuntion happening in the same year (2024) is pretty remarkable. Both of these planetary cycles represent huge technological and scientific advancements in society in addition to social movements. Our current times are extremely pivotal in creating social, political, scientific, and technological change.
While all of these planetary cycles indicate big challenges for our world, they also symbolize working on and for a better world. They symbolize the many challenges that we face trying to create a better world for humanity. In these concerning times, it's crucial to lean on each other, to find some kind of community even if it's a few friends you talk to regularly. We are not alone. We have each other. We will not lose hope. We ALSO create the astrology, and we can create a world for the liberation of all. As one of my mentors, Desiree Adaway, says, “Let’s get free together!”
